Santo Tirso | 10 Years - ColorADD School Program

A decade full of Color!

It was 10 years ago that ColorADD Social took the “ColorADD School Program” to Santo Tirso for the first time and, since then, this partnership has not stopped!

Ten years, more than 4,700 screenings carried out by the project's 6 partner opticians, in 38 schools from 4 groups and other non-group schools!

It has been a long and wonderful journey, full of color, sharing and friendship, done hand in hand with the Municipality of Santo Tirso, which for us already represents home.

It was a joy and, without a doubt, an honor to celebrate this milestone today, November 6th, at Escola Secundária D. Dinis, together with the school community, its students and professionals, partner opticians and representatives of the Municipality, as without your support and participation, this path would certainly not be so beautiful.

Thank you Santo Tirso, here’s to the next ten years!
Because color is for ALL!

ColorADD Social in Spain!

The month of April 2023 marks the beginning of the implementation, on the ground, of the partnership between ColorADD Social and the ACROMATES Association, with the debut of the “ColorADD in Schools Program” in Vigo.

During the 2023/2024 school year, ColorADD Social not only maintained but reinforced this partnership with ACROMATES, and, together, we took the “Programa nas Escolas” to Madrid, Valladolid, Lugo and Leon.

We visited a total of 4 schools, where we spoke to more than 260 students about the topic of color blindness. Together with 4 local opticians - Avalens, Ioba, Todo visión and Adrián Salgado Ótica y Audción - more than 260 visual acuity and color blindness screenings were carried out.

But let's not stop there! We intend for this project to continue to advance at full speed across Spanish territory!

Because color is for ALL!

In partnership with the ACROMATES Association, we spoke to 4th and 5th year students about color blindness, achromatopsia and their limitations - it was very gratifying to see the students' reactions when they heard about the ColorADD Code and understand the impact that this action had.
Being able to count on the support of the Municipality of Monforte, not only in offering ColorADD kits to all students, but also through the presence of the Education Councilor, was a huge privilege for us and the certainty that we are following the right path! Furthermore, the presence of ONCE representatives was also very important!
A thank you also to Adrián Salgado Ótica y Audción who ensured that visual acuity and color blindness screenings were carried out!

We return to Santo Tirso!

Today we return to Santo Tirso, where the "ColorADD in Schools Program" will take place for 3 days.

We are happy in the places where we feel loved and Santo Tirso is also our home - this is the ninth school year in which we are here spreading color through the 1st CEB schools, having already reached more than 4,700 4th grade children, for whom color blindness no longer has any secrets and is just another characteristic of some people.

These students are already agents of paradigm change and this is, without a doubt, an inclusive Municipality by color. Proof of this is the involvement of the local community, where 4 different opticians work in collaboration and, year after year, ensure visual screenings, guaranteeing the visual health of their children.

ColorADD carries out an unprecedented pilot project in Spain

Social impact solution created in Portugal crosses the border with the aim of including more than 2 million colorblind people from the neighboring country

ColorADD is a Color Identification System for Color Blind People, a universal language that allows, through partner entities and brands, to include more than 350 million people all over the world without discriminating. Since its creation, the language that includes color, created in Portugal by Designer Miguel Neiva, has reached more than 90 countries around the world.

This time, the “Programa ColorADD nas Escolas”, which has already impacted more than 45 thousand students of the 1st Cycle of Basic Education in more than 1800 schools in Portugal, presents its first intervention in a school context in Spain, at Colégio Alba in Vigo, next April 14th.

color blindness

Colorblindness is a non-visible limitation that affects the day-to-day life of the color-blind person in simple everyday tasks such as choosing clothes, selecting a line on public transport, playing a board game or choosing a pencil to paint a drawing.

Whenever and when color is the rational key element to successfully fulfill a certain objective, the ColorADD solution identifies the colors, through simple codes, by the addition system of the three primary colors (blue, red and yellow), plus white and black, thus managing to have the entire color palette, giving the colorblind individual independence.

ACROMATHES and Achromatopsia

This initiative, within the scope of schools in Spain, arises from the close relationship between ColorADD and the ACRÓMATES Association (Asociación de Afectados por Acromatopsia y MCA). Knowing that there are several types of Color Blindness – Deuteranopia, Tritanopia, Protonatopia and Achromatopsia – it is the latter that, as a rare genetic condition, mobilizes this action in the neighboring country, in a school with children with this particularity and who see the world on a scale of black, white and gray.

The ColorADD.Social team develops this joint action with ACRÓMATES and SEAN GAMES, with the support of FEDER (Spanish Federation of Rare Diseases) with the strategic objectives of raising awareness of difference, educating to live in a diverse society and concept of equity in the field of education, accompanied by an unprecedented process of early screening for color blindness and visual acuity, for all children impacted by the project. This set of actions is intended to combat bullying, failure and school dropout phenomena, promoting inclusive schools for all, where all children can have the same learning opportunities.

Moreover, a fundamental note for the direct involvement in this action of Colégio Alba of Teachers, Special Education Teachers, Psychologists, Psychopedagogues, Librarians, School Management, fathers, mothers and guardians, as well as the population in general.

ColorADD in Spain

As this is the first school-based action in Spain, ColorADD has been at the service of the Spanish population for over six years, in various strategic sectors for the implementation of the color identification code.

From its first implementation with MacMillan publishing house, in school textbooks, through areas as diverse as the selective collection of waste with FOVASA in the Valencian community, beach flags and bathing safety with a close partnership with the Blue Flag managing entity in Spain ADEAC (Asociación de Educación Ambiental y del consumero), there are also several board games published by Spanish publishers.

The emblematic Spanish textile brand of sweetwear El Niño adds the inclusion of color to sustainability values in its production lines in 2021 and, more recently, in 2022, the Shopping Centers of the Klépierre group optimized the visit of the colorblind population to its 7 spaces in the cities of Madrid, Barcelona, Oviedo, Murcia and the Canary Islands.

The good will of communication focused on the values of inclusion and equity for a very important segment of the population - more than 2 million citizens - means that ColorADD implementations in Spain are in an exponential growth process, approaching a bathing season of 2023 where beach flags, for the vast majority of the most emblematic beaches on the entire Spanish coastline, will be identified with the ColorADD color code.

This project, which is now starting, aims to be replicated in another 23 Spanish cities during 2023/2024.

Arouca | ColorADD School Program

In order to raise the awareness of the school community to the issue of color blindness and carry out visual screenings with students in the 4th year of the 1st cycle of the entire municipality, we carry out the "Programa nas Escolas".

At the start of the initiative, the councilor for education, Cláudia Oliveira, was present, taking part in the action where kits were distributed to participating students, consisting of a set of colored pencils and a booklet alluding to ColorADD. Teaching establishments were also provided with teaching materials in digital format, so that teachers can, in the future, apply them in activities in the school context.

“For the Municipality of Arouca, the integration and well-being of our children is extremely important. Therefore, re-associating ourselves with this national campaign, after a year of stopping due to pandemic constraints, happened naturally”, highlighted Cláudia Oliveira, noting that “the added value of this action is clearly visible on the ground, with the diagnosis being happen in our children, at the same time that this limitation is normalized with their peers, leaving them more prepared to accept the difference”.

"Municipality of Vendas Novas implements school project to detect color blindness in childhood."

"The Municipality of Vendas Novas joined a school project dedicated to the problem of color blindness: ColorADD.

It is a project aimed at students in the 3rd year of the Agrupamento de Escolas, which covers this school year and the next, a total investment of 1,000 euros. It consists of training actions for greater awareness of the problem of color blindness, allowing contact with the colorblind vision, feeling its constraints and experiencing the difference. It also includes screening for color blindness so that an early diagnosis is possible.

The presentation was made on January 12 and 13, in the extension of the Educational Center and Basic School of Landeira, with an awareness action that gave students the possibility to see the world through the eyes of those who suffer from color blindness. A ColorADD kit was also given to each of the 100 students, a gift from the Municipality of Vendas Novas, which includes a bag, colored pencils and an activity notebook for the autonomous, independent and playful exploration of this universal language.

This innovative project has an inter-municipal character, through CIMAC, and locally, it has the partnership of the Casa Branca Optical Center, in a perspective of social responsibility."

ColorADD School Program in Mogadouro

The 2 primary schools of Mogadouro received the visit of ColorADD.Social once again on November 26th, 2020. The 4th graders, as well as the students in the 5th grade, were able to understand and experience the difficulties inherent to this non-visible limitation. WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT US

TESTIMONY

Teacher Librarian Sílvio Maltez - Mem Martins, Sintra,+

“We actually noticed that color is not for all. And the color element, which had the purpose of helping and making it easier, in this case would only make it harder to some people. The Code is simple, and it is also in this level of education (primary school) that pupils learn colors: primary colors, and then by mixing primary colors getting a secondary color, the code follows this line of thinking. Therefore, it is quite easy for pupils to associate the creation of a secondary symbol from a primary symbol”.

Colorblind - Porto, Portugal+

“I found out I was colorblind around the time I was attending college. Until then, I thought I didn´t know colors, in other words, I thought I hadn’t learnt them well. I tried to find a way to adapt, but currently I think society has to adapt itself in order to accept us”. “Miguel wishes children to learn the Code, so that in 20 or 30 years from now, no colorblind will ever feel belittled or different. He thinks of others, and how to change the lives of other people, and that is a huge inspiration".

City Councilor – Municipality of Mogadouro, in Portuga+

“Amazing team of ColorADD.Social, the expectation created was truly and positively exceeded through the way all of you interacted with our children and teachers. We were happy about your sessions and we intend to continue with this initiative”.

Pupil – Boticas, in Portugal+

“I liked doing this activity very much. It is really fun, and it is also very important for the colorblind”.

Optical store in Viseu, Portugal - Pedro Figueiredo+

“With this code, it is possible for every people to get equal access to color. Currently, the biggest challenge for Miguel Neiva and ColorADD will be the code massification, so that it will be present in all places, everywhere, in order that the code actually becomes an inclusive tool and allows everyone to have access to color in the same way”.

Volunteer - Luis Muengua+

“I think the value of this work, and the value of the activities ColorADD.Social has been developing lies precisely here, that is to encourage the awakening of the exercise of citizenship, both by us, as contributors, and the target-subjects of this work, which are the pupils and teachers”.

Primary School Teacher - Campo Maior, in Portugal+

“It is an amazing project. I believe our students loved it. I was completely unaware of the symbology, I knew there were several types of colorblindness, but I didn’t know ColorADD. I think we really must be sensible to these situations because we might have a pupil with this limitation in the future. I would like to thank you so much for coming here to our school, and for the variety of activities you delivered. Thank you very much and hope to see you soon!”

Daughter and Mother of a colorblind person+

"One day, when looking at a rainbow together with my youngest boy, aged 13 at that time, I mentioned how the 7 colors were so beautiful and clear that day and he answered, in a mix of sadness and innocence “I always thought the seven colors were a myth… since I never could see more than three and I thought it was just that..."
