ColorADD AT SCHOOLS

SCHOOL PROGRAM

We developed a program, composed of a series of actions, which are carried out in primary schools, mainly to 3rd graders, as well as to the entire educational community, so that they can understand both this limitation and the inherent day-to day constraints, whilst learning a tool, which allows a colorblind person to overcome such difficulties. Being this a continuity program, annually replicated, it will be possible to embrace all primary school pupils.

SCHOOL PROGRAM

"SEE AND FEEL COLORS"

Enabling students to experience the colorblind vision, understand its limitations and constraints. This way, through an interactive and playful dynamic, we enable the children to identify as closely as possible with this limitation, thus making pupils more sensitive and raising their awareness to all differences and the need to know how to relate to it.

COLOR VISION SCREENINGS

Promoting early screening of color blindness and visual acuity to pupils of primary schools, in order to identify possible cases of colorblindness. Thus, follow-up can be done so as to prevent school failure and dropout, low self-esteem and self-confidence, bullying situations, etc.

WHAT WE HAVE DONE

ColorADD.Social

Founded in 2014, with the objective of promoting awareness raising on the theme of colorblindness as well as spreading, focusing on teaching, the use of ColorADD code as an inclusive good practice, ColorADD Social has since that time embraced different projects in different regions. Both in Portugal and in other parts of the world (Mozambique and India), we always count on the support of several entities from different areas that, each in its own way, have contributed to the growth and notoriety of this project. Since 2017 ColorADD.Social, as defined within the approved application to Portugal Social Innovation, carried out the School Program focusing on schools both in the North of Portugal and Alentejo region - at this time a new project is underway specifically aiming at the central Alentejo region.

Colorblindness screenings in the age group corresponding to children aged 8 - 10 years (children attending the 3rd and 4th years of primary schools) is essential to early detect possible cases of colorblindness. When this preliminary diagnosis is made, both the school and the parents (and guardians) will be informed by means of a report, so that these children can have proper follow-up. It is intended that these cases be referred to specialists for complementary diagnostic tests. Through partnerships with local opticians and major groups within the municipalities where we carry out the Program, we have been able to gather concrete data on the incidence of color blindness in Portugal since 2014 regarding this age group.
