Arouca | ColorADD School Program

In order to raise the awareness of the school community to the issue of color blindness and carry out visual screenings with students in the 4th year of the 1st cycle of the entire municipality, we carry out the "Programa nas Escolas". At the start of the initiative, the councilor for education, Cláudia Oliveira, was present, taking part in the action where kits were distributed to participating students, consisting of a set of colored pencils and a booklet alluding to ColorADD. Teaching establishments were also provided with teaching materials in digital format, so that teachers can, in the future, apply them in activities in the school context. “For the Municipality of Arouca, the integration and well-being of our children is extremely important. Therefore, re-associating ourselves with this national campaign, after a year of stopping due to pandemic constraints, happened naturally”, highlighted Cláudia Oliveira, noting that “the added value of this action is clearly visible on the ground, with the diagnosis being happen in our children, at the same time that this limitation is normalized with their peers, leaving them more prepared to accept the difference”.

EDUCATION

SCHOOL PROGRAM

We developed a program, composed of a series of actions, which are carried out in primary schools, mainly to 3rd graders, as well as to the entire educational community, so that they can understand both this limitation and the inherent day-to day constraints, whilst learning a tool, which allows a colorblind person to overcome such difficulties. Being this a continuity program, annually replicated, it will be possible to embrace all primary school pupils.
